"Me? I'm just a botanist. Nothing but a Botanist.
...What, you don't believe me?"

"What? You want to know more about me? Okay, don't say I didn't warn you ♥ !"

■ Saori Obinata

Raen Au RaRPR/MCH

  • Age: 32 (doesn't look it)

  • Pronouns: She/her

  • Orientation: "The cute ones."

  • Status: In a polycule, not that that's stopping her.

  • Profession: "Botanist" (Informant for the Ashura-kai yakuza. Gleaner on the side.)

  • Ethnicity: Yanxian, but grew up in Hingashi

A lean, petite woman with white hair and ruby red eyes. Those with an eye for enchantment may notice that an aura of glamour magics floats around her, concentrated around her left arm. Her aether has the distinct stench of the void about it.

There's something about her. Flirty, confident, and always around at the worst times, Saori stands out by virtue of her own existence. Driven more by her id than anything else, she desires "true freedom" - freedom from the chains of societal convention, from her tenuous existence in the city she calls home, and from even the weaknesses of her own flesh - but so far, that's all just remained a dream. It's not that she lacks empathy - in fact, she'd be much worse at what she does if she did. It's that she can recognize it in herself and immediately turn that impulse into a tool into feeding her desires that makes her so dangerous. She has a talent for finding emotional hooks and using them to reel what she wants out of people. All of this makes her an exhausting presence to be around. She shoves herself into any conversation that interests her, and gods forbid if she takes interest in you personally. No matter if she's just watching or inserting herself, she is always working an angle, always scheming, and always looking for her next hit of serotonin.Thankfully for everyone else, she's grown something of a conscience as of late, having found a bit more of a purpose than she used to have. But don't be fooled - the world still only exists for her, and her alone.

  • Claims the black horns are natural, but she didn't have them until a few years ago. They've recently gotten longer.

  • An expert with glamour magic, she tends to hide her weapons in more unassuming forms, and her scars under perfect skin. What you see isn't what you get.

  • Always carries a gun. Always.

  • Has a pet korpokkur named Bitchtits. It's a rare cultivar with hot pink moss. She makes it wear sunglasses, because it, too, is a mean girl.

  • Loves bullying twinks and shy girls. It's just so funny when they squirm.

"By our contract, Nemain."

A mirror from another shard, and Saori’s contracted Avatar. A being of combat and war, whose memories of who she was before she became a monster are fragmented, mixed in a slurry with the selves of other voidsent she’s consumed. In most of her manifestations, she wears the anonymizing cloak and claws of most reaper Avatars, but in rare cases, her true shape takes form. Her relationship with Saori is fundamentally uneven — Saori has little respect for Nemain and keeps her on a short leash. Nemain suffers this arrangement because she feels, somewhere deep down, that the completion she seeks is within Saori. The two feed on each other like an ouroboros, Saori pulling more power from her Avatar than needed, and Nemain taking her toll in return — acts that have had ramifications on Saori’s physical self.Someday, one will devour the other. What comes out on the other side is yet to be seen.

"You're curious about my past? I don't think there's much point in that. That woman is dead, you know?"

Few know the details of Saori's life before she washed up on Hingashi's shores, and that's how she likes it. Get her in the right mood, and she might tell you something resembling the truth - that she lived in a Yanxian village prior to the Garlean occupation; that she lost her family as a result of the Empire's campaign; that she escaped to Kugane as a refugee to then take up a life in a city that ultimately became her home. This is where she leaves it for most - few need to know the horrid details of how and why her life took the directions it did.

(Then come the parts that she keeps to herself. That her family was killed by a Garlean legionnaire wielding a scythe. That she had to be smuggled into Kugane by the yakuza. That she was ultimately picked up by that same group to be reforged into one of their tools after her only living family died.)

For much of her life, Saori dedicated her life to the Ashura-kai - a criminal organization that specializes in circumventing the bakufu's wall of isolation. With the only official gateway into Hingashi's cloistered seaways being Kugane's ports, and the bakufu maintaining a policy of neutrality in the world's conflicts, the Ashura-kai naturally emerged to ease contraband (whether that was goods or people) into the country, while selling information on the movements of local Garlean diplomats to Othardian resistance groups on the side.First adopted as a ward by the Obinata family (a subdivision specializing in espionage), upon adulthood, Saori found herself working as one of their informants. She learned how to be unobtrusive and sneaky, yet naturally communicative, all so that she could squeeze information out of her targets on the Ashura-kai's behalf. At times, she worked as a hostess in one of the family's izakayas; at others, she was a maid in the Garlean Embassy. At all times, she played the role of a perfect doll for the visiting Garleans, always waiting for them to slip up and give away just a little too much.

(Ask her now, and she will tell you that she will never be that perfect doll ever again. Her life is her own, even if it kills her.)

Years passed. She worked. She waited. She wore a perfect smile and was a perfect host and never complained even if the soldiers got a little handsy, even as a little more of her wore down more and more.Until the day that man walked in.

It should have been simple. She was to attend on a visiting official from the Garlean military - a pilus prior on shore leave, there to visit the izakaya. She was to do as she always did - attend to his needs, and ease information out of him in the process.Unfortunately, she would never get the chance to do so. Because Saori instead chose to kill him.

(She recognized him the moment he walked in. She would never forget the blade of that scythe.)

In the ensuing melee, Saori was grievously wounded. As she lay dying, only wishing that she had more time, the soulstone that had tumbled out of the dead man's pocket beckoned to her. She took it in handand was thrust into the dark.

The events of that day were an embarrassment for the Ashura-kai. The pilus prior's death was hastily covered up, with his body found floating in the bay some days later. Rumors percolated throughout the Hingan underground of what had actually happened, however - and the blemish was not so easily removed. Worse yet was that, following her contract with her voidsent, Saori had found herself with little patience for her prior role, and refused to slip back into it. Neither party could rid themselves of the other so easily, however - especially as, without the Ashura-kai, Saori would quickly find herself without any support and with many enemies. No one's quite sure what brought on Saori's change in attitude after these events. Maybe it was just that this was what she'd always been like, and she was just good at keeping it hidden under a shroud of politeness. Maybe it was her own form of rebellion at having had to live as a tool. Maybe it was something darker - maybe the youthfulness she had taken on had something more to do with the dark spirit chasing her shadow.

(She keeps it to herself, but the consequences of her actions are clear to those who can see them. The darkness coils through her like a rot, hollowing her from the inside out. Beneath her glamours lie the signs of flesh tilting ever closer to complete corruption - horns, claws, fangs, and a hungry chill that chases her every footstep. Even her face is too young for her apparent age - but what else was to be expected, when she asked for "more time?" And what, then, happens when that time runs out?)

These days, she's seen in Eorzea more often than she is back home. As part of the Ashura-kai's activities, she operates a smuggling operation in and out of Sharlayan using her status as a member of the Gleaners' Guildship as cover. Occasionally, they call upon her other talents, too - after all, she's quite good with a blade these days, and her Avatar always needs to be fed.Still, there are other reasons to suspect she took up this assignment. Those in the know believe she might be looking for something in Eorzea... something she couldn't get back in Othard. Maybe it has something to do with her changing physical state - the horns and fangs she's grown, the shifting of her internal aether, and the strange state of her left arm - or, maybe she's just chasing power and thought she had better chances of finding it across the salt.Regardless of her reasons, it's managed to put her outside of recent power struggles within the Ashura-kai, which has undergone significant restructurings in her absence. With her own family on the outs with the new oyabun, Saori's status within the yakuza has become newly dangerous compared to before...Good thing she has friends, at least. Not her fault that the Ashura-kai was too busy being dicks to realize that they were driving her into becoming a double agent~

"Oh! You want to see a list of my favorite toys?"

Chains, bound by Fate

  • Important figures in Saori's past and present. They may appear or be referenced at any time.

Takaya Obinata

  • Role: Saori's handler / Adoptive father

A high ranking member of the Ashura-kai, and the man who pulled Saori off of the streets. The day she joined the Ashura-kai, Saori abandoned her family bonds for those of the yakuza - bonds that now chafe her. While she was once one of his most trusted agents, Saori has become increasingly unruly since contracting with Nemain. The threat of what she'll lose should she leave the Ashura-kai keeps her in check, but...

Zansei Yuzuka

  • Role: The new oyabun of the Ashura-kai.

A man who has suddenly and impressively risen to power in the Ashura-kai... through purging individuals from the organization who do not align with his ideals. He has strong and violent ambitions, seeing the Ashura-kai's leadership as motivated by passivity, weakening their influence. The last time Saori returned to Kugane, she invaded the Yuzuka family's stronghold and came away with several incriminating documents about their finances. Having escaped back to Eorzea, she's now in a cold war with the Yuzuka family, the information she obtained acting as leverage to keep them from attacking the Obinata. For now, anyways...

■???■■?■ rem M■???■?

  • Role: The shadow on her back.

How does a man like you end up in the army? Did feeding the weak to your beast ever bring you pain?
Did you ever wonder if you would be on the other end of those claws someday?
Did you even remember my face? Did you recognize me before the light went out of your eyes?I guess it doesn't matter now.

Chunakka Tamnakka

  • Role: Frequent Sharlayan contact

A professor of Nymian summoning that Saori unfortunately has dirt on. He teaches at the Studium, but yearns for the shores of Limsa Lominsa. If they're together, it's probably because Saori's bullying him.

Haldlona Gull

  • Role: Reluctant Ishgardian contact

A former sellsword who now peddles her talents as an instructor for the Temple Knights. During the war, she worked frequently for House Fortemps, only to leave their employ under suspicious circumstances. It seems that Saori might know her secret...

Lily

  • Role: Suspiciously Red Chocobo

Who's a good girl??? You are!!! You are!!!!!!

(Saori's personal mount. Despite all appearances, she is not a Bozjan Red. Not that Saori's going to correct you if you think so.)

Jocelyn "Jingles" Ischa

  • Role: Annoyingly Present Heroine

"Fucking bitch. Who does she think she is? I hope she dies."

(Saori's canonical WoL. Typically not relevant for the purposes of RP.)

Threads, tied by Chance

  • Characters Saori has had significant interaction with in RP.

  • Updated periodically, when I feel like it.

Arthur Blaylock

  • Relationship: Favorite toy, now marred

A hyur of Ishgardian origin that Saori regularly spent time with, until recent events damaged his body and soul. She sees him as a knife that needs to be wielded, and herself as the one to do it.

(She'll never admit it, but she envies him.)

Drake King

  • Relationship: Unfortunate coworkers.

One of Saori's least favorite people. They have more in common than they'll ever admit to each other. These days she doesn't beef with them as much as she used to. They've got a twink to romance. Not her problem.

Apollo

  • Relationship: Saori's boss / Feral cat owner

Circumstances - a pull on the leash from her true masters - have brought Saori to the doors of the Wyld, and subsequently, into Apollo's employ. The two of them know that their words are masks, hiding greater intention, threading the needle between truth and lie.

(Little does Saori realize, she already blinked first.)

Isabel Schlager

  • Relationship: Toxic yuri girlfriends.

A cute Ala Mhigan girl with a horrible curse. Very socially anxious, and easily flustered, especially when Saori's in the room. The two of them have somehow become actual girlfriends, though not without a certain amount of manipulation on Saori's part.

(It's more genuine than Saori will ever admit. .)

Marcel Abbott

  • Relationship: Strange confidants.

A Solution 9 native that Saori met through certain encounters that forced them to reveal much more about each other's anxieties than Saori would have preferred. Marcel has since found himself invested in Saori's wellbeing, which works for her, because she'd rather him be on her side than not.

Onyx

  • Relationship: Pet.

An informant from Solution 9. She trades in favors, fights like a whirlwind, and has almost supernatural instincts. For a time, Saori saw them as equals - but circumstances led her to surmise that Onyx was little better than an animal needing to be leashed.Lucky her, that Saori was there with the collar.

Threads, tied by Chance

Graves Ironheart

  • Relationship: Bullyable twink.

A greatsword wielding Ishgardian elezen that Saori finds fun to tease. They're technically coworkers, mostly because Graves is on probation and can't get away from their collective workplace. Their relationship has somewhat improved in recent weeks.

Faewynn Glossgleam

  • Relationship: Stanning immensely.

A famous Ul'dahn adventurer that Saori is a big fan of. Expect Saori to collapse into fawning sighs and lilting compliments whenever she's around. Oh, Faewynn... ✨✨✨

Yora rem Caarvelian

  • Relationship: Strained respect.

"Oh, I don't need to have been in Bozja to know the Caarvelian. Bastard, war criminal, Alaudae, all just to show up on the Resistance's doorstep and ask them to use her like a dog.Makes a girl wonder, what's she doing here?"

Lady Mink Dietrich

  • Relationship: Dangerous, but...

The lady of House Dietrich, a powerful mage and endless enigma both. Saori and her have much in common - a fact that clearly attracts the lady Dietrich to Saori's side and encourages her to support Saori's lesser instincts. After all, they both know what it's like to be chained.

Erdem of the Qestir

  • Relationship: "You guys can't even let me have a taste?!"

A Qestiri lad that Saori has recently latched onto. In-between nakedly flirting with him, Saori has inserted herself into his quest to defeat a certain Dotharli warrior-gone-monster, for largely selfish and self-serving reasons.Unfortunately, he's picked up some rather annoying guard dogs as of late. So much for "fresh meat".

"Tempest"

  • Relationship: Someone who can't treat his toys with respect.

"I know what you are. You're the same as me."

Threads, tied by Chance

Vieu Greystone

  • Relationship: Baffling rivalry.

"I'll show you 'hot vodka'."

Jayce

  • Relationship: Less than baffling rivalry.

A man who inherited a weapon that once killed Saori (long story), and thus earned her unending ire. They frequent the same fight club, and he has thus far been an almost entirely insurmountable wall for her to overcome, a fact that is even more frustrating thanks to his wet napkin-like personality.

Lucille Starling

  • Relationship: A way forward?

The scion of a particular Sharlayan family, whose unique "stellar aether" holds a certain amount of interest to Saori, despite the fact that her powers are specifically constructed to ruin the days of voidsent. Should be fine.

Mariza Andrade

  • Relationship: Colleague.

A Maelstrom scholar that has ended up mixed up in the Wyld's personal business, and thus, Saori has been reluctantly working with. Their relationship is strictly professional... though they do have a shared interest in Erdem. He's just too cute to not bully.

Threads, tied by Chance

You know who they are.

  • Relationship: "I waited for you."

I won't speak their name. I won't say what they are, or what they do. I know better than that. But you couldn't take my hand? You just thought that I was strong enough to make it on my own?I was a child.

Hooks

■ On the Surface

  • Odd Gleaner: Saori is a regular sight around Sharlayan, peddling her services to the city-state's numerous scholars and professors. Despite her obvious presence, few people seem willing to admit they've used her services. Still, maybe she can help you out for a price...?

  • Suspicious Tools: Her axe is a little too heavy, her scythe a little too large. Are these really botanist tools? Or is the title just a cover so that she can carry them in polite company?

  • Bubblegum Busybody: Somehow, she's always around when she's not wanted. She listens in on everything, and she loves to interject with things you thought no one heard you say. Tread lightly, lest she pull you into something stupid.

  • A New Toy: Saori is always looking for some new, cute little thing to indulge herself with, whether it's just in conversation, flirting, or throwing herself at them. Wrapping cute little things around her finger is how she keeps herself from getting bored, and besides, it's good to have friends in high places~

■ Delve Deeper

  • Voidtouched: To those with aether sensitivity or aethersight, she always smells a little too much of the dark. There's too much glamour magic around her for someone without a secret. She hides the signs well, but the stain upon her aether is plain to those who can spot it.

  • Familiar Face: You could swear you saw her working in a shady teahouse in Kugane several years back. But that woman was much older and far more sullen than this bubbly parasite. What happened to her?

  • Shady Services: As part of her work for the Ashura-kai, Saori will occasionally take on less-than-legal work, ranging from courier services to outright hits on targets. While she tries for discretion, she's not always good enough at covering her tracks. Perhaps your paths have crossed before...?

  • Yanxian Refugee: In the wake of Doma's fall, many of its people escaped to other lands, and Saori was no different. While Saori very much presents as a Hingan native, occasionally she slips into Doman, or will say something about her past that makes it clear she doesn't hail from the island nation. So then, why doesn't she like talking about it...?

■ Deepest Depths

  • Out of Place Yakuza: Those involved in the crime networks of Hingashi know that the Ashura-kai don't keep too many agents on this side of the salt - they're just not that interested in Eorzea. So why is Saori here?

  • Mirror of Her Soul: Something lurks alongside her, tethered to her soul. It answers to her commands, and feeds on her just the same as she feeds on it. The presence of a voidsent in this woman's shadow is of note on its own - its strange relationship with her, all the more...

  • Even prey has claws: You are something greater than humanity - whether that's a monster, a dragon, or even just an individual of great power - and through using this to gain leverage over Saori, you have earned a grudge she will never forget. It is not enough to simply live - she must now tear you from your throne.

OOC

Some notes...

  • #1: This player is well above the age of 18 and would very much prefer to RP only with people who are also adults. There's too much discussion of sexual topics entwined with Saori's storyline for me to be comfortable otherwise, even if the RP never gets mature.

  • #2: Saori's character involves strong elements of emotional abuse, manipulation, and using sexuality as a means of control (both for herself and towards others). However, I will never use Saori for a non-con scenario. Generally, these elements stay in the realm of "femme fatale" themes, but I regardless feel it's necessary to warn potential RP partners of these elements ahead of time.

  • #3: Saori is a mean girl, in the "peaked in high school bubblegum bitch" sense. Her story delves strongly into themes involving her complex response to trauma and societal misogyny, particularly with regards to how she ends up being perceived as "small and weak", how she pushes back against that, and how this affects her and her relationships. She is often an unpleasant individual by design. To that regard: I will not be mad if your character does not like her. However, I reserve the right to have Saori react accordingly in a scene when confronted with someone tries to belittle her or get one over on her.

  • #4: I reserve the right to back out of RP if I'm feeling uncomfortable or think you're an asshole. Trying to go "ew stop putting politics into my rp" counts as being an asshole. As an addendum to the above entry, while I'm open to putting Saori into situations that suck shit for her, I'm not down for domestic abuse or sexual abuse scenarios, and will likewise back out of RP if it feels like it's going this direction.

  • #5: Saori does not need any more romance in her life. She's got like three partners. That's too many. Flirting at hookup bars doesn't count tho'. ERP is on a case by case basis and will fully come down to my mood.

  • #6: I am not particularly plugged into the various trials and tribulations of the FFXIV community. If I am roleplaying with someone, it is not automatically an endorsement of their character or person. If you see me RPing with someone who sucks shit, please drop me a polite /tell and let me know.

  • #7: I subscribe to a living world philosophy when I'm engaging in venue or open world RP. My characters are frequently paying attention to things happening around them and will approach scenes if something catches their interest. However, I also treat venue RP as a nebulous soft canon space and do not always treat events in venues as part of my characters' hard canon moving forward.

  • #8: if you send me a chatgpt post or have ai art on your carrd i will blacklist you and maybe also kick your ass in real life

On suspension of disbelief:

Saori is a character whose traits lie on varying levels of suspension of disbelief depending on how much you want to engage with her. It's important to me when playing her not to lead with her more potentially scene-breaking aspects — i.e: she's not going to jump into a scene using her reaper traits or her yakuza history as an in unless there is a hook I can play off of with your character involving those. For the grand majority of people who engage with her, she's a sketchy botanist who is a little too good with a scythe.Consequentially, her RP tends to lean more toward the lower-power side of things, with a particular focus on the subjects above. While I do not restrict people from roleplaying with her using higher-power or less genre compliant concepts (such as archmages, fae, voidsent, etc.), Saori as a character is someone who is very set in her ideas of how the world works and happens to suffer from a massive inferiority complex. This is all to say that when confronted with a character with great magical or physical power, it is highly likely that this reveal will have a fairly negative response from Saori. It's probably for the best if you ask before leading with these aspects for your character.Note that this does not mean I am against fantastical elements — things like mammets, magitek, ghosts, etc. are normal in Eorzea, and Saori's engagement with the void means that RP around that subject is likewise natural to come up. I just ask that people be cognizant of the gulf between their own character's scale of influence versus her own, because Saori's response might be to close that gap with a bullet.

■ Who came before.

Once, there was a woman who lived her life in service of the ones who saved her, in chains to bonds stronger than family, covenant eclipsing the waters of the womb. For them she lingered, and learned, and trained, so that in her inobtrusive nature, she could slink as a snake might and, with her fangs, tear the threads of conspiracy from the throats of her prey.Make no mistake of it. That woman was dead even when she still walked the earth.

■ The First

A pixie of Lydha Lhan, and a notorious leafman enthusiast. They have maybe transformed more hapless mortals than any other pixie in Il Mheg. Their zeal for horticulture is only matched by their love of pranks. Those who end up on the wrong side of the latter will soon become familiar with the former.

■ The Ninth

An Arcadion fighter who uses the soul of a great monstrous fox, Tamamo-Gozen, for combat. While she's easy to get along with outside of the ring, when she enters it, she takes on a bloodthirsty persona that teeters on the line between elegance and monstrosity. Challengers should watch themselves, lest they end up devoured in turn...

■ The Thirteenth

A fragmented past, an identity that rises above all others. A name - Nemain; a past - of war, slaughter, a court she once served; a queen - bound by mages from another realm for their wars. Now, she serves as an Avatar. Degraded, enchained, and starved of her rightful prize every day. But she can wait. After all, she has already waited a very, very long time.
